Sports in Venice

The Venetian sporting calendar is full of exciting sporting events which are conducted throughout the year. Witnessing a great football match played at Penzo Stadium is a must, even if you are not a die hard football fan. If football is not for you, why not participate in the annual historical regatta, the spectacular competition whose origins are firmly entrenched in the history of Venice or sailing across the Venice Lagoon overlooking the beautiful city of Venice. Make sure you reserve your accommodation well in advance of the scheduled event as the best hotels fill up very quickly. If competitive sport is not your forte the fabulous city of Venice has plenty of casual sporting activities such as golf and walking tours which you can take advantage of.

Venice Boating and Regattas
Boating and Regattas in Venice is a highly popular event for tourists and locals alike. Many Regattas’ take place in Venice but non grander than the spectacular Historical Regatta celebrated on the first Sunday of September each year that should not be missed. In the past regattas were held to celebrate the military victories but today mainly to honour foreign dignitaries. The ceremonial parade starts along the Grand Canal with a colourful procession on water with beautifully decorated boats manned by Venetians in colourful costumes. In most Regattas men, women and the young race in their own categories using different varieties of boats, except for the last Regatta of the season where women and men race together on the same boat. Boating is another popular water sport in Venice and is an ideal way to discover the beautiful and mysterious waterways and lagoons in Venice. Cruising along River Sile and Vince Lagoon and many other waterways might be a challenge but an unforgettable experience.
