Corpus Christi - Tenerife |
In the early thirteenth century a nun, Juliana of Liege, was disturbed by visions of a full moon with a dark centre. It was revealed to her in an apparition that the cause of the dark hollow was the absence in the Christian calendar of a feast celebrating the Eucharist. In 1246 the Pope Urban IV, who had served as bishop of Liege, instigated the feast of Corpus Christi with a papal bull. This highly venerated Christian feast day of Corpus Christi is vigorously celebrated throughout Tenerife and in particularly in the lovely village of La Oratava. The mid June festival of Corpus Christi is famous throughout Tenerife as the villagers create the most elaborate carpets from flowers and colored sands and literally pave the streets with intricate art works.Corpus Christi is traditionally a festival commemorating the Christian Eucharist, in which the wine and wafer are symbolically transformed into the body and blood of Christ. The festival originated in the 13th century and is observed on the Thursday (Corpus Christi) after Trinity Sunday. A total of thirty-five tapestries will adorn the main streets of the town and the Town Hall Square. Over three tons of coloured sand taken, as tradition requires, from the Mount Teide National Park will serve to enable the tapestry makers from the town of La Orotava on the island of Tenerife to create the main tapestry which will cover the Town Hall Square in commemoration of the Octave Day of Corpus Christi on 26th June. Roomsnet.com can offer you excellent accommodation in Tenerife during this festival.
