Charles Bridge
Introduction
Charles Bridge is a famous 13th century gothic-style structure, located in the capital city of Prague. Apart from being one of the main historical attractions in the area, it is also an important pedestrian route that connects the Old Town and the Mala Strana over the Vltava River.
Built during the reign of King Charles IV, the Charles Bridge has endured many floods, unlike its predecessor - the Judith Bridge - which collapsed in 1342. The designing of this bridge was undertaken by the King`s favourite architect, Peter Parler, who is known for many other beautiful structures such as the St. Vitus Cathedral at Prague Castle.
30 baroque-style statues and statuaries adorn the bridge, depicting saints venerated during the 1600`s and 1800`s. St. John of Nepomuk`s statue is by far the most popular, and it is said that touching the statue brings good luck.
