Arc De Triomphe
The unmistakable Arc de Triomphe (arch of triumph) holds a special place in the hearts and minds of the fiercely patriotic French people and can be found in the 8th arrondissement of Paris. Standing over 164 feet in height, this impressive iconic monument is the focal point of the busy Place Charles de Gaulle which is at the western end of the Champs-Elysees.
Based on Rome`s Arch of Titus, the Arc de Triomphe was designed by Jean Chalgrin in response to Napoleon`s need for a monument to commemorate his victories. Though Napoleon commissioned the arch in 1806, it was only completed in 1836 under the then ruler, Louis-Philippe. The Arc de Triomphe itself is adorned with intricate sculptures including such notable creations as `Departure of the Volunteers` (also called `Marseillaise`) (1792) by Francois Rude and `Triumph of Napoleon` (1810) by J. P. Cortot. The 30 shields at the apex of the arch each recall one of Napoleon`s victories, while the inner walls hold the names of 558 French generals.
Today, the Arc de Triomphe is also the place where one will find the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and its eternal flame. Visitors can head to the top of this historic monument (236 steps, though there is a lift which goes part of the way up) where apart from an exhibition hall, one will find an observation deck which provides truly amazing views of the city including that of the Champs-Elysees, the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre.
