The plot
Roxie Hart is a manipulative chorus girl who shoots her boyfriend in cold-blood and convinces her husband Amos to take the rap. When Amos finds out that his seemingly innocent wife had intimately known the murdered man, he decides to let Roxie be jailed for her crime. Velma is a vaudevillian who shot the other half of her sister act in a fit of passion. The women`s jail where both are serving time is under the thumb of Matron `Mama` Morton who helped Velma become the golden child of the sensation-hungry media and arranged for a return to vaudeville after her acquittal. Roxie begins to steal Velma`s limelight and is also favoured by Billy Flynn, Velma`s lawyer. The story follows on with Roxie`s scheming plans to get herself acquitted and Velma`s demise from the spotlight. Both girls find out though, that celebrity is a fleeting experience and that ultimately, they can only depend on themselves.
