Duomo Cathedral in Milan

Milan`s Duomo cathedral is the largest Gothic cathedral in the world and the second largest Roman Catholic cathedral ever, second only to the cathedral of Seville. Though construction began on this beautiful masterpiece in 1386 it was not concluded until the 19th century. Being one of the most striking attractions made by human hands, the Duomo cathedral has much to offer. The ancient baptistery is where St. Ambrose baptized St. Augustine in AD 387. The cathedral, boasting of 135 spires and 3400 statues, is 157 meters long and can accommodate 40,000 people. The breath taking view from the roof of the Duomo, stretching over the city to the Alps is an experience not to be missed. The cathedral is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and the tallest point which is the Madonnia statue is beautified with 3900 pieces of gold leaf. The Duomo is also famous for the traditional Nivola ceremony which takes place in May and September when the Bishop is elevated up to the ceiling where he brings down a nail from the cross of Jesus Christ.
