Introduction and brief history: The Miami Designer Reservation League was responsible for the birth of The Art Deco Weekend in 1976. This festival was conceived with the notion of raising awareness and appreciation about art and crafts. The main focus of this festival remains on architecture, although this has become a nexus, that brings together an impressive collection of modern to antique art, ranging from vintage clothing to post world war two furniture!
The Art Deco Weekend has become one of the most popular events to be held in Miami, the 2006 festival managed to draw over half a million people. Owing to the wide range of activities that the festival offers it is not only the artistic souls that are attend the festival. People of all sizes and backgrounds all gather to this one of a kind festival that features more than 85 events! Some of the types of events lines up are: Lectures, Antiques and art vendors, musical attractions, dance performances, theatrical performances and much more.
The 2007 Art Deco festival is based around art deco originating from the Asia pacific region and will be held under the title, ‘East Meets West: Art Deco from Shanghai to Miami,’ although the art on display will not be restricted to Shanghai alone.
Location: All food and beverage booths, vendor booths, artists and their creations and antique dealers will all be on display between 5th and 15th Streets (Ocean Drive Miami Beach).
