Transportation & Getting around the City |
 |
| Being one of the key tourist destinations in Europe, Madrid boasts one of the best public transportation systems. A comprehensive road network, a railway network connecting major European cities, a great taxi service, rental cars and coach services all combine to give Madrid a great city to travel in. Starting fromMadrid’s Barajas Airport, located just 15 kmfrom the Madrid city center, there are several convenient connections from the airport into the city and vice versa. A regular bus service also leaves the airport to the city center. Madrid has a very extensive bus service and many bus terminals but Estacion sur de autobuses Mendez Alvaro (Main Bus Station) is by far the most important bus terminal in Madrid for long distance travel. Most national and international destinations can be reached from buses originating here.Depending on the traffic and your budget a taxi will get you to the city in 30 minutes. If you want to take the metro or the subway network that crisscross Madrid, the airport terminal has direct access to the Madrid metro system. The commuter trains of Madrid are another transport option. Trains run from Atocha and Chamartin stations and reach many great sightseeing destinations all around Spain. Also many private companies offer services from Madrid to other European cities. Access by road into Madrid is from France. Renting a car is another option to get around in Madrid and all known rental companies are present. However, be prepared for snarling traffic jams, chaotic driving and parking problems, especially during the rush hour. Taxis are plentiful, convenient and are easily recognizable and inexpensive. However to be on the safe side always take either a black metered taxi with horizontal red bands or a white one with diagonal red bands. Outstation taxi travel is expensive. |
