Cablagata de los Reyes - Madrid |
| On 5 January every year, the evening before Twelfth Night, Cablagata de los Reyes is celebrated all over Spain and Madrid is no exception. The Thee Kings arrive by boat at the waterfront of Barcelona (Moll de la Fusta) to be greeted by the Mayor of the city and conducted to the nearby park of Ciutadella. The Cavalcade of Kings Magos or Cablagata de los Reyes is a typical parade of floats held simultaneously in many Spanish cities in which people disguise themselves as the threeKings of Magos (Melchor, Gaspar and Balthasar) and their pages and assistants. From there the Three Kings depart in their carriages, the principal part of a grand parade that proceeds slowly through the streets and avenues of the centre towards the Olympic Stadium. The Kings and other participants in the parade throw sweets and other candies to the children and spectators along the route of the parade. According to the tradition the children who have behaved badly during the past year receive caramel coal, and children whose behavior was impeccable receive sweets. There are many food stalls with traditional sweets along the way, especially along Gran Via . Its customary for the children to be allowed to inspect the Three Kings` boat and carriages, days before the parade, to leave messages requesting gifts, The Cablagata de los Reyes takes two fundamental forms. The play of the three Magi, and a mounted procession. Plays are currently staged specially in Aledo and Churra in Murcia and Canada, Sanguesa, Santillana del Mar or Viso de los Pedroches. The latter one taking place once every four years. The whole country celebrates the Day of the Three Kings, since it is they on their camels rather than Santa Claus drawn by reindeerwho distributes presents to children the night of the 5th January. |
