 |
Introduction
Griffith Park in Los Angeles is the United States` largest municipal park. With over 4,107 acres of natural terrain covered mostly with the great California oak trees. A small detail that slips many people`s mind is that the great Hollywood sign is situated in Griffith Park`s Mt. Lee.Situated in the eastern Santa Monica Mountain range, the Park`s elevations range from 384 to 1,625 feet above see level. With an arid climate, the Park`s indigenous plant life varies from coastal sage scrub, oak and walnut woodlands to riparian vegetation with trees in the Park`s many deep canyons. Plants native to California grow abundantly in Griffith Park and they include the California species of oak, walnut, lilac, mountain mahagony, sages, toyon, and sumac. Also it is home to a few endangered plant species, mainly manzanita and berberis. The park`s former owner, Colonel Griffith J. Griffith, gave part of his property as a Christmas gift to the people of Los Angeles on one condition. That the park, `` must be made a place of recreation and rest for the masses, a resort for the rank and file, for the plain people,` Today`s Griffith Park offers many exciting family attractions, educational and cultural institutions, and miles of hiking and horseback riding trails, and provides visitors an ideal environment of enjoyable recreation activities.
