About Duke of York`s Theatre London Designed by architect Walter Emden, the Duke of York’s theatre was previously known as the Trafalgar Square Theatre due to its location, later shortened to Trafalgar Theatre in 1894 the present name of Duke of York’s Theatre was added in 1895. However the theatre briefly changed names once more in 1990 to the ‘Royal Court Theatre Downstairs’ until reverting to the Duke of York’s.
The theatre provides seating for 640 on 3 levels and received some modifications in 1979. Successive plays performed here include Richard Harris’s ‘Stepping Out’ which lasted a full three years at the Duke of York’s and Willy Russell’s ‘Shirley Valentine’ which also played for over 2 years. The Duke of York’s was host to the Royal Court Classics Season from 1995 to 1996 featuring ‘Rat in the Skull’, ‘Hysteria’ and ‘The Changing Room’.
Location… Trafalgar Square, River Thames and Fleet Street are all a few yards from London’s cosmopolitan Strand. The National Gallery, Chinatown and the BBC World Service Centre are close by for exploring and sightseeing while shopping and dining at restaurants from around the world are all a lazy stroll away. There are plenty of friendly hotels in the area and Charing Cross Tube Station found close to the Duke of York’s theatre provides plenty of connections to any part of the city. |
