About Drury Lane Theatre London The Drury Lane theatre stands on a site dedicated to theatres since 1663. The location was home to 3 previous theatres which were either demolished or destroyed by fire until in 1812 the present Drury Lane theatre designed by architect Benjamin Wyatt was built. The theatres shell and foyer still remain from this period while the magnificent side colonnade and portico were added between 1820 and 1831.
Considered one of the worlds most impressive theatres, Drury Lane features an impressive stage that is 24 meters deep, hence making Drury Lane an ideal venue for the extravagant musical performances staged since 1925. Drury Lane has a seating capacity of 2237 on 4 levels and is classed as a grade 1 theatre. Some impressive performances here include ‘Rose Marie’ which enjoyed a 2 year run since 1925, Noel Coward’s-‘Cavalcade’ which ran for a successive year and featured a huge cast and crew of over 300. ‘Oklahoma’ which ran to a staggering 1375 performances while ‘My Fair Lady’ clocked in 2281 performances. However Drury Lane’s longest running show remains ‘Miss Saigon’ which enjoyed a successive run from September 1989 to December 1994.
Location… Wellington Street is found in one of London’s busiest and most colourful areas, Covent Garden, renowned for its many shopping and dining options, the area provides an abundance of entertainment and leisure activities from lively street musicians to colourful parks and of course the magnificent Drury Lane Theatre.
