About Cambridge Theatre London Modern and elegant the Cambridge Theatre was opened in September 1930. Designed by architects Wimperis, Simpson and Guthrie the theatre was given a facelift in 1950 with red paint candelabras and chandeliers however in 1987 Carl Toms re-designed the Cambridge and its original elegance of gold and silver decor was restored. The Cambridge sports a seating capacity of 1231 on 3 levels and is listed as a grade 2 theatre.
Interestingly the Cambridge was used as a cinema in the 1930’s and again in 1969. Although noted for its short runs the Cambridge is renowned for notable performances such as ‘Half a Sixpence’, starring Tommy Steele and ‘Return to the Forbidden Planet’, which won the Olivier Award for Best Musical. The infamous musical ‘Chicago’ ran at the Cambridge in the late 1970’s to an impressive 590 performances.
