About Trooping the Colour The pomp and pageantry of the English can be witnessed in all its traditional glory every June at the historic’ Trooping the Colour’ ceremony. Attended by members of the Royal family, the event marks the Queen’s “official” birthday and gets its name from the parading of a coloured flag of one of the regiments from the Household Division. The ‘Trooping the Colour’ ceremony date back to 1748 and traditionally starts with the Queen receiving the royal salute from the Horse Guards Parade followed by performances by the massed bands. After the “colour” has been passed down the ranks, the Queen leads the military cavalcade to Buckingham Palace. The ceremony draws to a close with a spectacular fly past by the Royal Air Force and a booming gun salute at the Tower of London. Location Trooping the Colour, takes place in the historic Whitehall area, while the Queen’s route starts from Buckingham Palace before winding its way through the Mall, Whitehall and back again to her stately residence. Those looking to catch a glimpse of the Queen and the ceremony can do so from vantage points at St. James’s Park and along the Mall, while the Westminster and Charing Cross Underground Stations provide easy transport options to the area. |
