C`an Marca Caves - Ibiza |
The caves are more than one hundred thousand years old. It is also a place from where you can get a spectacular view of the Mediterranean Sea. The caves were supposedly the hideout for smugglers who brought in goods to Ibiza and Spain. The mouth of the cave is at a level of 8 to10 metres above sea level. Take the hourly tour which commences at 10.30 and goes on till sunset and trek the same ancient route taken by the smugglers so long ago. The cave is almost fossilized, except in the deepest areas. Multilingual guides will take you through the interior and relate stories of its history. The yellow gold multi level atmosphere is mysterious and silent. Stalagmites and Stalagtites have formed weird figures and shapes. The geologists who worked on the cave have tried to recreate what existed in ancient times, by artificially recovering the cascades and water courses. At the very core, watch out for the 30ft cascade of clear water. Remains such as bones and fossils of extinct rodentsfound in the cave, have been removed for safe keeping and preservation to the Natural History Museum.
