Santa Tecla Festival - Costa Dorada |
 |
Tarragona located along the beautiful Costa Dorada about 60 miles to the south of Barcelona, comes alive during the third week of September as the whole town celebrates the Santa Tecla Festival, Santa Tecla being the local patron saint. This ancient festival comes to life as the town puts on dramas, jazz concerts, spoken dances (dating back to the 15th century), movies, sports activities and the infamous human castle. On the 21st of September you can witness the magical Singing of Vespers at the Cathedral followed by a host of colourful dance parades through the streets of Tarragona. The Santa Tecla Festival pays tribute to the saint on the 23rd of September by holding religious services and the street Procession of the Holy Arm while the Cathedral comes alive with the chiming of a hundred bells these are all followed once again by beautiful folkdances, which by the way are performed by internationally recognised dance troupes. Of course the sunny skies and invigorating fresh air together with the smiling locals will soon have you and your family joining in the fun and merriment that make up the Santa Tecla Festival. The town squares, Placa de la Font and Plaza del Toros are the main venues holding most of the Santa Tecla Festival competitions so make sure you hang around this area as a number of very interesting activities, some dating back hundreds of years, take place here. Another aspect of the Santa Tecla Festival to be enjoyed are the myriads of fire works that light up the night sky which seem to invite even more visitors to Tarragona in celebration of the vibrant Santa Tecla Festival.
