Carnival - Barcelona

The whole of Barcelona erupts in one big celebration during Carnival time. Carnival time is celebrated annually between February 23rd and March 1st just before the onset of the sombre lent season. If you happen to be visiting Barcelona at Carnival time you’ll wish you lived in the vibrant city just for the sheer joy of tasting the delicious cuisine that seems to be available in plenty during Carnival time, one such feast being Jueves Ladero aptly meaning Fatty Tuesday which is a tortilla making competition judged on taste, so obviously there’s a lot of tortillas to be eaten. Of course the most vibrant aspect of Carnival season are the fancy dress costumes, mystical masks and huge colourful floats. The market places and squares of Barcelona fill up with happy partygoers who compete for the best costume or float, there’s music dancing and plenty of food to keep the celebrations going, so take along your best walking shoes as this is one week of revelry you simply cannot resist. The sunny skies of Barcelona and the gentle sea breeze seem to add to the merrymaking and good cheer as you walk through snow storms of confetti and find most restaurants and pub are geared up for the celebrations with plenty of special offers in store. By the way the Barcelona-Sitges International Antique Car Rally is also held at the same time and is well worth watching. Poble Espanyol, Barcelona’s model Spanish Village holds an all night celebration on Saturday just before the week of Ash Wednesday while children’s carnivals and parades are organized by most schools. Carnival week comes to an end on Wednesday with a sombre funeral procession to mark the death of the Carnival King.
