Barri Gotico - Barcelona

Barri Gotico or the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona is not to be missed if you want a trip back to Spain’s rich history with some interesting shopping opportunities thrown in. Situated North East of Las Rambla and housing some of the best Gothic buildings in Spain Barri Gotico is laid out around the Placa de Sant Jaume Square. Highlighting Barcelona’s prosperous origin, within the Barri Gotico quarter is the magnificent Cathedral of Barcelona one of Spain’s biggest Gothic buildings, the Catalan parliament or ‘Parlament de Catalunya’, Palau Reial and ‘l`Ajuntament’ the significant old town hall. The buildings date back to the 14th and 15th century and are a treat to explore as are the remains of Roman walls which are to be reconstructed and surround the quarter. Barri Gotico consists of narrow streets, alleys and public squares where weekly performances of the Sardana Dance can be observed. Plenty of cafes, restaurants and shops line the narrow streets of Barri Gotico, check out the Els Quatre Gats-the Four Cats-a historical cafe that was once haunted by the likes of Pablo Picasso while Picasso’s museum El Museu Picasso is also found close by. Renowned for its tourist shops along Carrer Ferran the Gothic Quarter has much to be explored with charming old shops doting its squares it’s quite easy to find good bargains in lace, hand crafts and even garments.
