This is the eight year that my friend and I have stayed at the Carter Hotel it is not the most luxurious but for value and ocation it is very good.
The sheets are clean but the bedspreads could do with being cleaned or replaced, as they were dirty looking. The water was hot which is what you want first thing in the morning.
So if they had the housekeeping staff clean the rooms at least 2/3 times a week that would be even better as we were there seven days and not one came in at all. Read Less

I was a bit apprehensive about staying in this hotel as I had read some bad reviews but was pleasantly surprised when we arrived. We were checked in really quickly and our room was very clean. We received a maid service and got fresh towels twice in our 8 night stay. The only thing I would complain about was the attitude of the porters - they expected a tip for opening the door for us which they weren't going to get and they weren't very friendly when they didn't receive a tip. I would definitely recommend this hotel as the lcoation just off of Times Square is fantastic. Read Less

I'm a backpacker and i'm used to budget hotels but I can honestly say that this is the WORST HOTEL I HAVE EVER STAYED IN.
We arrived in the early hours of the morning and were kept waiting 30 minutes for check-in despite there being no one else around for most of that time. While we were waiting a guy came down to complain about bed-bugs - and he had loads of bites to proove it. Then someone else came to complain that they'd been given the key to an occupied room. We were finally checked-in to a room that very obviously hadn't been cleaned since the previous occupant (!!!!!). We complained and were given a new room which seemed fine until we went to have a shower and discovered a basketball-sized hole in the wall of the shower extending to the outside!!!!!! (An attempt had been made to plug it up with a dirty towel!)
This was the most expensive accomodation of our trip and easily the worst quality. The awesome location was the only redeeming factor.
Maybe we were just unlucky but my advise is still: DON'T STAY HERE. Read Less

I have just had a five day break in New york saying at this hotel and I have to say this is the worst hotel I have ever stayed in!!!
As soon as we walked into the lobby you could smell unclean dirty air this hotel is very dated and needs alot of work doing to it. The staff never spoken to us or checked to see if everything was ok they even looked unclean them selfs, we had no light in the room which I asked them to fix but they did nothing about so we had to just have the bathroom light on.They never once clean our room or changed our bed on our first day we went out and bought some proper towels as I did dare to use them!!! I cant belive that this is allowed to be open for bussiness. The only good thing about this hotel was the location we were right round the corner from times square so this was great for being soo central and the price was good but to be honest I should had spent more to get some thing alot better!!
This hotel is nothing like the picture on the site the curtains had all brown stains on them, the bed sheets had holes and stains head bord was all maked, they didnt have a kettle or a fridge in the room which is mad as this is a self catering hotel!!! At your on risk stay at this hotel !!! Read Less

There are absolutely no redeeming features about this hotel at all. It is the most dire accommodation I have ever had the misfortune to stay at - I've stayed at hostels in New York which are 5 star compared to the Carter Hotel. The hotel is disgustingly dirty (stayed there for 5 days and never saw a cleaner). We had to change rooms 3 times - the first room had a smashed window which had shards of glass hanging down dangerously yet the Management did not seem to think this was an issue! The facilities offered on the website were non-existent in fact I'd go as far as to say that they website was a total mis-representation of the facts. The owner was the most unhelpful, disrespectful individual I have ever met who obviously spent absolutely no money on the upkeep of the hotel at all. There were holes in walls; internal doors that were in pieces, dirty carpet stuck on the wall instead of headboards - it was absolutely the pits. I would never suggest that anyone stay there as it is detrimental to health. I cannot believe that this hotel has been passed as fit for human habitation and suggest you think twice about showing on your website as it will reflect badly on yourselves. I feel so strongly about the state of this hotel that I am actively contacting the appropriate departments within New York in order that they send environmental health representatives to this hotel as a matter of urgency. I would like nothing better than to see this hotel closed down!! Read Less

though I HAVE to give a poor rating for a couple of things - cleanliness and facilities, the location and price are excellent for NY. I expected this before entering the hotel because of reviews and to be honest I never thought cheated in this place ... it does exactly what it says on the tin. For anyone who complains about facilities etc in this place I say "You're in NY for heaven's sake!!!! What do you NEED in a hotel?!".
Bottom line is you will not get cheaper in this location, its safe and secure, good deal for my part! Read Less

I have read a lot of comments, bad comments, before my short stay in the Carter Hotel NYC. I was there with 2 friends and we had in one room one King Size bed and one Queen Size bed, enough place for 3 people! The bathroom and the room were clean, A/C working. But we found in the morning outside (not in our room!!) a dead animal like a roach (I'm not sure). It's a pity, because for this price in this area the hotel is ok. I read so many terrible review about The Carter before we stayed there and was really woried, but I'm so glad I took a chance! Although it isn't the most luxurious hotel (that's a bit of an understatement - it's pretty grotty!) the location more than made up for this. Walk to the end of the road and you right in the heart of NY. Who could want more? The staff were generally ok. The female staff were quite rude at times which didn't bother me personally but the male staff were really helpful. Our shower broke when we were there and they fixed it immediately so service is fine. For the price it's an absolute bargain simply because of the superb location. Just don't expect a luxury hotel because you'll be sorely disappointed! I'd definitely stay there again and recommend it to anyone that isn't planning on spending most of their trip in the hotel room! If all you want is a comfy bed and a hot shower in a fab location for less than $200 a night then The Carter can't be beaten for value. Highly recommended. Read Less

great location but the staff were not very friendly or helpful and we stayed for a week and nobody came to clean our room once, if you needed clean towels/toilet paper you had to go down to reception and ask for it, plus they need to sort out the pipes because they are very loud and kept us awake a few of the nights, but this is more or less what we expected for the price so there is no point in complaing, if it's a cheap, centrally located hotel you're looking for then this is perfect, just don't expect much customer service, and stay out of the shop below it as it is a rip off!! but we still had the time of our lives, we were in new york after all and even a 1* hotel couldn't ruin it!! The hotel was generally dirty, the rooms were not cleaned, the staff were consistently unhelpful. The manager verbally attacked my girlfreind for complaining about having to change our own bedding.
