Stayed here with my daughter for 5 nights from 4th to 9th September 2008. Staff were very friendly and helpful. We requested a standard room on a high floor and were allocated a room on the 12th floor with a lovely view of the Empire State Building. The room was large with a small kitchenette with coffee maker and fridge. We had a flat screet T.V, a walk-in wardrobe, a digital safe, and a new bed which was very big and comfortable. The hotel was very clean and we felt very safe there.
Excellent breakfast in Blooms restaurant just beside the hotel, and we also recommend dinner at Faglioni Italian restaurant around the corner in Lexington Avenue and 39th Street.
Hotel location good, 2 minutes from Central Station and 15 minutes from Times Square.
Hotel is good value compared to other hotels in New York, and we would recommend it.
Taxi from JFK airport costs a fixed price of $45 +5 toll. Hotel arranged our taxi back to airport for $58 which was very convenient. Read Less

Having done EXTENSIVE research & with the help, comments & advice of Trip Advisor members,we decided to book the Bedford for 4 nights.
It was clean, warm & comfortable.Ideally situated with walking distances of 5 mins to Grand Central,15 mins to E.S.B. & 20 mins to Times Square.Excellent base location.
Whilst showing slights signs of age,the bed & bath rooms could do with a little make up.Our room was on the third floor, inward facing with no "outside" noise at all.
Being honest, negatives would be that the toilet flush wasnt repaired after being reported. The room safe didnt work even after we told that it would get sorted.Cups & dishes werent washed for a couple of days. The toilet roll wasnt replenished.
These are review comments not complaints,as they didnt spoil or ruin the great time we had on our first & hopefully not our last trip to New York.
Good value for money. Can recommend Read Less

We went to New York for the shopping and the location was fine, the hotel is basic enough but perfectly ok if you are not going to be spending a lot of time in it. Staff were friendly and helpful etc..Its on a quiet street so not too noisy at night. Read Less

I minute from Grand Central Station, so location is excellent. I ran the Marathon, so had to accept that all the Manhattan hotels hiked their prices during the time we stayed. #850 for four nights - room only. Hotel itself is ok, clean, but certainly no frills. would be the equivolent of a 2 star basic in the UK. Read Less

We arrived a few days after the gas explosion, so lots of the surrounding streets were blocked off, which was unfortunate and made it a bit difficult getting our bearings. The rooms werent ready when we arrived, we had to wait about an hour, the nice receptionist apologised for the delay and upgraded us to one of the suites at the top of the hotel. This was really good and roomy, and we appreciated the comforts. The lobby is very small and needs updating. The cocktail bar is also tiny and expensive. They are doing up the hotel floor by floor. One day there was a huge number of big boxes of Lazyboys being delivered to floor 12, and if that is the standard of furniture they are putting in the rooms, then it says a lot for the hotel. All in all a great location at 40/Lexington, and lovely reception staff and very good accomodation; we also met other Irish people who regularly use this hotel as the standards are high. No hesitation in recommending it. Read Less

We had an excellent stay in NY and the hotel was ok. We were slightly disappointed in that we had booked a 'non' smoking room and we were put in a smoking room which was not that good as there was a smell of smoke within the room and on the bedding. I have given the Bedford average for facilities offered but on reflection there were no facilities as it was a 'room only' room so I would not have expected facilities apart from telephone and tea making facilities which were not provided. The bedroom was small and rather shabby. The cupboard door to the kitchen area was almost off its hinges and the safe lock didn't work. However, these problems were dealt with when raised. For the money I would have expected a slightly more upmarket hotel although it was in a good central location and reasonably quiet. Most of the staff were helpful although they didn't necessarily come across as particulary friendly. I have also never had to pay the whole amount in advance before and do not think this is good practice. Read Less

The swipe cards to our rooms did not work and we had to live with 1 key for the duration of our stay. We were dissapointed with this and we had planned to come and go as we pleased. After several promises from the hotel staff we gave up trying. We were allowed a late check-out which was much appreciated and the staff were friendly at all times. Read Less
