Siracusa, capital of the province of Syracuse is on the eastern coast of Sicily. Traces of its Greek ancestry are evident in the ruins and its oldest quarter, the island of Ortygia where most of the medieval sites and best shops are located. Ortygia is famous for its Spring of Arethusa and the Temple of Apollo. In addition to its Hellenic heritage, there is a fair share of Roman ruins coupled with Gothic architecture and art. It is on the World Heritage list and has many sites that are well preserved. Take the Interbus from Catania, Palermo or Rome. Many hotels offer modern comforts and cater to the needs of the tourists all year round. A visit is not complete without enjoying its sandy shores.
