Like most Sicilian regions, Messina has a rich history that dates from 2500 years ago and is located on the eastern tip of the island known as the Gateway to Sicily. Greek influence is evident in the ancient temples and ampitheatres. The Aeolian Islands as well as the mixture of Greek, Roman, Medieval, Norman, Baroque and Arabic architecture makes Messina a picturesque region. The astronomical clock in the Cathedral of Messina is a popular attraction as well. A ferry trip across the Straits of Messina provides transportation to Calabria and the rest of Sicily. The beaches too attract many people during the summer. There is an abundance of seafood especially the famous Ghiotta a fish soup that is a specialty here.
