Erice is an enchanting medieval city situated on the northern coast of western Sicily and can be reached from nearby Trapani. Interesting relics from the outlying area are housed in the Cordici Civic Museum located in Piazza Umberto I. The Villa Balio gardens are to be admired for its lush vegetation. In Erice you will see the crumbling ruins of Venus castle where a temple of Venus once stood. Pepoli Castle is worth a visit as its tower affords a spectacular view of the surrounding area. Temperatures plummet below Sicilian norms during winter and sometimes even snow is experienced. Several good restaurants offer local specialties especially Couscous with fish a firm favourite with travelers on their way to Traparni, Marsala and Favignana.
