Since the 18th century, Cantania has remained one of the most important cities of Sicily situated between the Ionian Sea and Mount Etna. This city is striving to gain popularity as a tourist destination and not merely a base to view the legendary volcano. The remains of the two Roman amphitheatres are impressive and the town is rich in Baroque architecture. Due to Mount Etna’s fickle temperament, Catania was damaged on several occasions by lava and earthquakes in the past. Shopping is concentrated mainly on Via Etnea with a few shops that sells local items, but the two street markets, churches and palaces are most interesting to visit. Catania is also used as a transfer point when traveling to other cities and regions by bus or train.
