Situated on the Southern coast of Sicily, Agrigento has been declared one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites. The sacred Valley of the Temples has made this city universally known. The Archeological museum houses a range of exhibits from the area. Due to its location far from other tourist destinations, most tourists opt to stay overnight or in the outlying area. Public transport operates to Agrigento from Catania, Siracusa, Palermo and Caltanissetta. The economy is based on potash, sulfur mining, agriculture and tourism. Agregento is served by the Port Empedocle which is supposedly the best harbour southwest of Sicily. Several sandy beaches stretch for many miles from Punta Bianca to Porto Empedocle, the most sought after being San Leone.
