The Moors and Christians Festival
This festival is held annually in September and beginning of October and is celebrated not only in Benidorm but throughout Spain mainly in the coastal towns to commemorate the banishing of the moors by the Christians from the Iberian peninsula. The festival goes on for three days with the Moors looking exotic in their feathered headwear and silk robes and Christians clad in armoury parade the streets in splendour. During the festivities both the young and the not so young join hands to enjoy the celebrations. Each year a Christian King and a Moor king are elected. A replica of a castle is built in the Plaza de Hispanidad in the old town from where Christians light fireworks at the bearded Moors, who inevitably loose the battle.
