Held on the last Wednesday in August, La Tomatina is a festival which involves tomato throwing. Held during the week long festivities of Bunol, the
Bunolian towns of Valencia is the hosting town of this rather dramatic event.
The history of the tomato throwing scene goes a long way. It is believed that this custom originates some where in the 1950’s which later became an organised event where even the tomatoes are supplied in truck loads for the
people of the city to squash and throw at each other.
The celebrations begin around 10:00 am with the initiating event of ‘palo jabon’,a greasy pole as high as two storey with a ham on the top. Once somebody drops the ham off the pole the chaotic festival begins.
Locals as well as visitors are given an ample supply of ripe tomatoes and a
time limit of one hour to hurl away the squashy red pulp. At the end of the hour a shot is fired where all activities with tomatoes must come to an end, at least for that year.
