This hotel offers excellent value for money in a very central location. It is spotless ; run by conscientious ; friendly staff, with good language skills. The hotel offers free internet access (3 PCs) ; a wi-fi area. Inside the hotel you feel cosy and very secure.
A slight drawback is the location of the hotel. Although only a short walk from Las Ramblas, walking back at night can be a bit intimidating. For the record, we walked back 4 nights after 2 a.m. ; were fine. You just felt that if you didn't have your wits about you something could have happened.
Leaving the hotel, turn left ; right at the top of the street to get to Las Ramblas, passing the Wild Turkey pub (worth a visit). This is the best way to return at night, although you can go right ; left during the day, no problem.
The above might put you off the hotel, but it shouldn't. The hotel is in a city centre location and is as rough/safe as any city centre. The very quiet and convenient location was, to us, preferable to a noisy hotel on the main street.
If you are early birds and sight-see/shop during the day returning to the hotal by 9/10pm then you probably would not even notice any of this. But if you are night owls like us, then I would recommend this hotel to groups, rather than singles/couples.
Bear in mind that this review was written after a winter stay when it got dark very early. The area could well be lovely during the bright ; busy summer months.

Was propositioned by a 'lady of the street but she could not afford me' and returning to the hotel was approached by pickpocket duo using the map scam but managed to sidestep them. We thought the Principal was very good value for money. The majority of the staff were English speakers which helped and they were all friendly and helpful. We read other comments regarding the area as being a bit 'seedy' which worried us at the start but when you take into consideration it is a 'working city' which has a life in parralel to tourism it is not so bad. I think what gives a wrong impression is the number of young people hanging around until you realise there is at least one Youth Hostel practically next door. Don't be put off by it! We had two funny incidents which just amused us. When we first went into the room we had free sachets of shower soap. We used those on the first day but they were never replaced for the four days we were there. strange! Secondly, we had a kettle in the room which we used. The only problem was the length of the electric cord or the height of the socket up the wall. We could not stand the kettle on the table or the floor as the socket was out of reach in both directions. We overcame by standing kettle on upturned wastepaper bin! Hotel had obviously not thought that through. Apart from that - a high rating and we would stay there again but bring our own extension lead!

Room very small but ok for the price. Had difficulty finding it as we walked from the airport bus stop in Cataluna Square. Location is in back street convenient walk to Ramblas and the Metro. Perhaps more directions needed, i.e. off the Ramblas turn into Hospital Road opposite the Metro Station Lyceu. Used a Barcelona Card everywhere and found it invaluable. << click here to read less |

Hotel Principal was a perfect choice for our three-day stay in Barcelona! The room on the 4th floor was cosy, clean and very quiet at night: no noise from the streets (Ramblas just around the corner) nor from the rooms next door. Buffet breakfast was good (coffee, choice of teas, fresh fruits, youghurt, muesli, toast, scrambled eggs, sausages, beans, juices, etc.) and the breakfast room was quite large so no queues in there. We enjoyed our stay at Hotel Principal although the surrounding aea outside appeared not wery good we did not have any problems going and coming to the Hotel. The staff were friendly, helpful and polite. We will definately stay there again.
It is also in a good location. You can walk to La Rambla in 5 mins and from there you are soon in the Gothic Quarter and not very far from the port. Also you are in walking distance of the Metro system and the many bus stops to various locations and of course the many shops. << click here to read less |

The breakfast provided was a lot better than I would have expected for a small hotel, it catered for all tastes. The only thing I would fault it for was the noise of the elevator exit doors. They were on a spring mechanism and when the slammed shut they would waken the dead. The walls of the rooms are partition standard and when those doors slammed you felt it as much as you heard it. If I was to stay again, which I would seriosly consider, I would ask for a room that was well away from the elevator. << click here to read less |
